Our Penn Hills estate sale on Orlando Place was the kind of sale that made you want to slow down and look at everything. This home held far more than everyday household pieces. Shoppers found historical material, military collectibles, antique stained glass, vintage toys, artwork, furniture, tools, and even a 1957 Triumph.
Some items immediately caught your eye. Others deserved a closer look because of the history behind them.
And honestly, that’s what made this sale so memorable. You could walk from one room to the next and feel like you had entered an entirely different collection.
A Remarkable Historical Collection at Our Penn Hills Estate Sale
One of the most unusual finds was a group of 19th-century Russian Imperial embroidered ecclesiastical textiles and chalice covers.
What made these pieces particularly interesting was the accompanying Schaffer Collection documentation, which attributed them to the private chapel of the Alexander Palace at Tsarskoye Selo.
These weren’t the kind of items you expect to come across during an ordinary Saturday of estate sale shopping.
The home also contained an extensive selection of German military and historical material. Shoppers could explore documents, correspondence, photographs, press photos, postcards, reference books, and collector publications.
In addition, the collection included a German Einheitslaterne military field lantern accessory and spare-parts case, a military uniform, and an 1869 map of Germany.
There was even an antique Filipino machete among the historical pieces.
For collectors who enjoy researching the story behind an object, there was plenty here to study.
A 1957 Triumph and a Vintage Honda CR-V
Then there were the vehicles.
A 1957 Triumph, with parts included, brought an entirely different kind of interest to the sale.
Alongside it was a 1998 Honda CR-V with a manual transmission and approximately 18X,XXX miles.
Estate sales can surprise you that way. One week, the standout might be an antique dining set or a collection of china. Another week, you’re looking at a vintage British vehicle.
You really never know what’s going to be waiting at the next property.
Vintage Toys Brought Back Plenty of Memories
While the historical pieces appealed to serious collectors, another part of the home offered a different kind of nostalgia.
There was a collection of vintage M.U.S.C.L.E. Men action figures, Tonka GoBots, a vintage WWF arena, comic books, a LEGO Star Wars set, and a Nerf gun collection.
The comics included familiar names such as Hulk and Star Wars, along with other titles.
For anyone who grew up with these toys, walking through this part of the sale probably felt a little familiar.
That’s one of our favorite things to see at an estate sale. An item doesn’t have to be hundreds of years old to bring back a memory. Sometimes an old toy can do it instantly.
The home also had vintage cameras, vintage clothing, and a Harmony acoustic guitar, giving shoppers even more to explore.
Antiques and Art at the Penn Hills Estate Sale
The décor throughout the property had just as much personality.
Beautiful antique stained glass windows immediately stood out. Shoppers also discovered decorative Gothic and Victorian Revival lighting, a stained glass lamp, oil paintings, antique and vintage clocks, and a cuckoo clock.
Then there were some pieces you simply don’t see every day.
A large ram skull with full-curl horns certainly qualified. So did an antique forge or blacksmith bellows table and an antique cast iron lawn jockey.
Meanwhile, an antique copper kettle with a stand, German beer steins and brewery mugs, Greek-style decorative pottery, vintage folk art wooden fairies, and a New Brighton, Pennsylvania crock added even more variety.
The collection also included Native American wall art, a deer skull, vintage glassware, and Pyrex.
There was a lot to take in.
Furniture With History and Purpose
Of course, the sale wasn’t only about collectibles.
The home also offered plenty of furniture, including an antique barrister bookcase, dining room table, buffet and hutch, dressers, display cases, and other antique and vintage pieces.
A vintage steel flat file storage cabinet was another interesting find. These old storage cabinets have a practical, industrial look that can work well beyond their original purpose.
Shoppers also found a Diebold safe and lock and a Singer sewing machine.
That’s part of what we enjoy about estate sale furniture. One person sees an antique. Another sees exactly the piece they’ve been trying to find for their home.
Don’t Skip the Garage
If you’ve followed our sales for a while, you probably already know this rule: always check the garage.
This property had miscellaneous tools, garage contents, and plenty more to dig through.
The garage isn’t always the prettiest part of an estate sale, but that doesn’t seem to bother the shoppers who head there first.
And we understand why.
Tools, hardware, storage pieces, automotive items, and things tucked away on shelves can end up becoming some of the most useful finds of the entire sale.
What Made This Penn Hills Estate Sale Different
Looking back, the thing we’ll remember most about this Penn Hills estate sale was the range of history under one roof.
You could examine documented Russian Imperial ecclesiastical textiles and then move on to WWII-era material. A few minutes later, you might find yourself looking through vintage action figures or checking out a 1957 Triumph.
Meanwhile, another shopper could be admiring stained glass, searching through old comics, checking the furniture, or heading straight for the garage.
There wasn’t just one collection that defined this home.
Instead, it felt like several different interests and periods of history had come together in one place.
That’s what made exploring it so much fun.
Estate Sales Have a Way of Preserving Stories
One reason we enjoy this work is that objects often tell you something about the people who owned them.
Sometimes that story comes through an old photograph or document. Other times, you see it in a collection someone spent years building.
Even ordinary belongings can say something about a person’s hobbies, interests, travels, or everyday life.
Then an estate sale gives those pieces another opportunity.
A collector may preserve a historical document. Someone may restore an old vehicle. A vintage toy might end up with a person who remembers having the same one as a child.
The belongings leave the house, but their stories don’t necessarily end there.
One of Those Sales We’ll Remember
Some estate sales stick with you long after the doors close, and Penn Hills was one of them.
It wasn’t just the number of things inside the home. It was the mix. Where else could you spend a Saturday looking through historical documents and military pieces, then come across a 1957 Triumph, vintage toys, antique stained glass, old clocks, artwork, and a garage full of finds?
We also enjoyed watching shoppers discover the things that interested them most. Some came with a specific item in mind, while others simply wandered through the house to see what they might uncover.
That unpredictability is a big part of why we enjoy what we do at Allay Estate Sales. Every home is different, and every collection gives us something new to learn about, photograph, research, and share.
The Penn Hills estate sale certainly gave us plenty to remember.
And now, many of those pieces get to continue their stories in new homes—which might be our favorite part of all.
